For those that missed seeing the movie “Steep” when it was in town earlier this winter, or for those that just want to see it again…or even for those that just want to support the Doug Coombs Memorial Fund and Teton County Search and Rescue…you’re in luck!
Steep will be playing this Friday at the Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village. Doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 6:30pm. A donation of $5 is suggested. All proceeds go to the the Doug Coombs Memorial Fund and Teton County Search and Rescue. See you there!!

It was painful enough to sit through the film the first time! The whole movie consisted of a bunch of egotistical mountaineers who keep saying, “skiing is completely worth dying for”. Personally, I’m able to live a completely meaningful life without pushing myself to the extreme limits. Doug Coombs should be alive and spending time with his child. Instead, he chose to take unreasonable risks. Not a respectable choice in my opinion.
Skiing and mountaineering are very fun, healthy pursuits. But the movie steep seems to glorify a few athletes who make really extreme decisions over and over and over again. That’s not what skiing or mountaineering are about.

Skiing and mountaineering are fun, healthy…AND dangerous. Accidents happen whether you are looking for them or not.
It was painful enough to sit through “don’t want to die’s post” the first time. The whole thing consisted of a bunch of egotistical comments which kept saying, “skiing like I do is completely reasonable”. Personally, we should all be able to live…completely meaningful lives without judging the decisions of others. It is indeed sad that Doug Coombs is not alive and spending time with his child, but who are we to call his decisions unreasonable? Doing so would be an unrespectable choice in my opinion.
Skiing and mountaineering are very fun, healthy pursuits. The movie steep shares the perspectives of a few athletes who follow their dreams over and over and over again. That’s… what skiing or mountaineering are about.
I think its funny how on these comment sections, some people write their opinion, and than get criticized by others for having a certain opinion, and than the criticizer gives his own opinion, as if their opinion is the only one that matters and is more important than the original criticized opinion.
As for the movie, are some of those athletes that ride a helicopter up really ski mountaineers in the same regards as Doug Coombs, Bill Briggs, Andrew Mclean to name a few?
From my point of view, it would be much better movie without all those pathetic sections. I would appreciate more added value: something about gear development, technique of skiing extreme angles, mental preparation, family vs skiing decisions, training…Steep reveals just a surface of the sport - it does not go deep enough. What I liked the most, were the shots from early eighties from Chamonix.
some advice for “don’t want to die”
check out the life and death of Doug Coombs on the internet
Doug died because he was checking on a ski buddy who slipped over a ledge
that’s a very respectable thing to do IMHO
unreasonable risk? 20/20 hindsight
I doubt it that you enjoy life more than Doug Coombs did
Lou Dawson leads the movie with John Muir’s quote, “Climb the mountains and accept their good tidings”. Every mountain lover gets that; the extreme-seekers or the 99% of the rest of us who don’t go quite as close to the edge.
Historically, those people in any pursuit who push the limits are interesting subject matter for writers and filmmakers. I doubt anyone will make a movie soon called “Less Steep”.
That said, there’s plenty to find fault with in the movie. Does anyone really think that the next evolution of the sport is skiing lines that require a BASE jump?

Yes. Shane McConkey. I’m sure he has friends
As for the first comment… man. We are all entitled to our opinion. Your opinion just seems old and conservative.
