I’m looking to invest in some steep snow climbing gear and am curious about your thoughts on the ultralight stuff (alu crampons, alu headed axes) vs steel. Most of my climbing is done here in the PNW. Do you use Whippets on some climbs?
Sounds like a good thing Mike! I do use Whippets in steep terrain…both for going up (skinning and booting) and coming down. The more I use the Whippet, the less I find the need for a lightweight aluminum mountaineering axe and the more I want a beefier, technical tool…like the BD Venom…when conditions warrant. If it’s iffy on bringing and axe at all though…I will often throw an aluminum axe on the pack.
I use both aluminum (BD Neve) and steep crampons (BD Sabertooth). I find I use the aluminum one’s more in mid winter in softer snow and when pitch isn’t too steep in the spring. When things get steep and firm though…I find that most of the time the spikes aren’t quite long enough and I opt for the Sabertooths for security.
I think if you are really going to push the steep and gnar factor and be on ice and rocks…go with steel. If you are mainly sticking to 40-50 degree snow…most of the time the aluminum stuff will do.
I’ve been leaning towards the Whippets (I assume one for each hand) for the kind of ascents I’ll do. Do you know if you can retrofit the new ones with the carbon lowers?
Also on my question list, are there any ski crampons that work with Dynafits for skis wider than 88mm? Looks like that’s the widest you can go with the factory jobs.
Most of the time I just go with one whippet. I think the likely hood (and experience) is that you would hang from one whippet that has engaged in the snow in the event of a fall. And no…the new whippets aren’t compatible with carbon lowers…but you might be able to mod something to work.
