It was only a matter of time before all of Alpinist Magazine’s assets ended up in someone else’s hand. Lucky for us…their skiers. At a recent auction, where Alpinist Magazine was eventually sold to a phone-bid for $71,000, publishers of Backcountry Magazine, Height of Land Publications walked away with rights to the magazine, its’ website and film festival. Considering Alpinist’s financial backer Mark Ewing pumped a reported $2 million into the magazine, it sure sounds like a good deal.
So what does this mean for Alpinist? Good question. The rumor mill says that the new owners plan to keep the magazine…which is hopefully good news for us skiers. I always thought that even just adding a small amount of ski mountaineering/ski alpinism into the quarterly published magazine could do wonders for it’s subscription base and open up a whole new realm of advertising dollars. Whether this will be the case is yet to be determined…but I look forward to finding out.

shit yeah…….I’d buy it.
….or maybe I’d get the rest of my subscription fulfilled…..
hehehehe.
I’ll send them photos!!!
Hilarious sample cover!
dood….it’s my first cover!
This is good news! I would buy it for sure. So long as they don’t forget us single plankers. You know, guys like Griber, Zellers, Koch, etc…
I almost cried when they went out of business. I hope it is just as awesome as always, just with more skiing.
Hmmmm……So I should have roughly 7 issues coming since #25 came shortly after I sent in my 2 year renewal. I think some of the $71,000 should have gone to those subscribers that got hung out to dry.
Joshua, I’d actually be surprised if they continue forward with the magazine…avoiding the angry subscriber issues. I bet the website…and some sort of Alpinist coffee table book collections is more in the plan….but just a guess.
Yeah, it would be nice to get something back, but I’m dubious. I sent in my check for a first-time subscription just as they went under, and honestly, I’m more upset I didn’t get my hands on a copy of issue 25 than that I lost my funds. I wanted that Laurel Knob feature article… Uggggh!
