Gravelly Range Snowmobile Avalanche

I heard about this video from some friends, but just watched it a couple days ago. It is from Jan 19th in the Gravelly Range in southwestern Montana, The avalanche had a crown of 4-6′ and a deposition pile 10-15′ deep. Pretty wild POV footage if you haven’t seen it yet.

Interesting that folks were still charging slopes like that a mere two days after a fatality only a mile or two away….

Can’t say I’ve witnessed a lot of “high-marking” in my day, but after seeing this video it makes complete sense why snowmobiling activities are responsible for more and more avalanche fatalities. It’s as if this rider cuts the slab himself…

where did you find out it was the gravelly range? in his post on snowest.com he never says where it is.

I first saw this link posted on the avy bulletin not too long back and thought they said it was in Wyoming… that was the first time I ever saw the BTNF site through a youTube link into report.

well no matter what?! if it is montana or WY its clearly been super f-ing unstable!!! REGARDLESS CHEERS! TO KIRK! BAD LUCK HAPPENS! point being, dont push it everyday! tequila and loaded guns sometimes led to trouble, responsibility can also happen!

As he glances over to his buddies on either side it also looks as if neither one of them has a backpack/avy gear on them. Probably would have been another typical snowmachine fatality had he been buried.

Looks like the fracture starts along the rock in a shallow part of the snow pack. One would think that proper education could help to recognize and avoid such potential hazard.
