The Off Square Theater Company Presents K2

K2: Off Broadway Theater

I’m not much of an “arts” guy, though some people may say there’s a bit of an art to this blogging stuff, but this play by the Off Square Theater Company sounds like it could be interesting enough for even dopes like myself.  It’s a story about two climbers who get trapped on K2 at 27,000′ after reaching the summit.  One has a broken leg, they’ve lost critical climbing equipment and are faced with some challenging decisions as conditions deteriorate.

K2: Two Men One Mountain

To add to the viewers interest, the company has invited local mountaineers to partake in a “talk-back” session after the play.  And after the avalanche and lost persons incidents we’ve seen in the valley this winter, it could be a great way to learn what goes through other peoples heads in the event of an emergency.  Guest mountaineers will include:

  • Feb 4 - Rod Newcomb
  • Feb 5 - Tom Turiano
  • Feb 6 - Stephen Koch
  • Feb 7 - John Griber
  • Feb 12 - Open
  • Feb 13 - Open
  • Feb 14 - Kathryn Hess
  • Feb 15 - Rob DesLauriers

Saw this the other night, it’s good. I’m an outdoors guy first and an arts guy second so can appreciate it from both perspectives. The play is an interesting essay on life and death, set on a ledge at 27K feet. The actors did a good job with their characters; we’ve all spent lots of time in the outdoors with people like this. There were a few occasions when you had to ignore the minor detail errors that only climbers would notice, but it was well done overall.

K2 is well acted and moving. Climber and skier types can enjoy a night out getting “cultured!”
