Win La Sportiva’s, Guess My Time: Grand Teton

sandstonegtxGuess my time running up and down the Grand Teton this weekend and win a FREE pair of La Sportiva Sandstone GTX hiking shoes! The Sandstone GTX is a great light hiker with a rugged Vibram sole, leather and mesh uppers, a capped toe for protection, a gusseted tongue and a Gore-Tex insert to keep you dry. Really some pretty slick looking kicks too! Please leave your answer in the comments section in the format HH:MM:SS. Answers will be accepted until 12:00pm (noon) on Thursday, Sept. 3rd, and the winner will be announced on Friday. Closest time (over or under) WINS!

guess-my-time-grand-teton
Running the Grand Teton is about 15 miles round trip, with 7000′ of elevation gain/loss.

The last time I ran the Grand Teton, a couple years ago now, I got my personal record for a car-to-car trip, with a time of 4:48:56. (HERE is a link to that post.) Conditions weren’t too bad this weekend. It was my first time doing the “catwalk” section on the Owen Spaulding route, because of icy conditions in the Owen Chimney and it was surprising to see so many parties on the upper mountain. For the record, I didn’t take any of the short-cuts on the switchbacks (up or down) and I stopped my watch at the upper saddle to put on a layer and at the summit, to eat and hydrate (and chat), for probably a total of about 10 minutes. Anymore specific questions you may have, feel free to ask them in the comments section. Good Luck!

I’m going with 4:46 36 Steve. I don’t think you would have a contest unless you beat your personal best!

  2. 2 Matt Aug 31st, 2009 at 6:36 am

I think you could’ve easily shaved off 15 minutes or thereabouts, so how about 4:32:16.

I will go with an over guess of 05:05:15. Because you will stop to take some pics to post here!?

    Good luck!

I know you had to of run it in 4 hours and twenty minutes! Sick bra! Is it snowing yet?

  7. 7 Jigidy Aug 31st, 2009 at 8:38 am

Saw you on the top Steve…you were looking good…"Focus, Focus" hahahaha

    I’ll say 4:47:45.

It was our first time up the Grand our time was 15:55:43…but I never stoppped my watch to snack/chat/change layers/take a shit…etc. We left room for improvement.

    Good Stuff,
    Jig

The “Petzoldt shortcuts” don’t save any time; I took the trail while Christian Beckwith took the Petzoldts and we kept meeting at every point the “shortcuts” intersect the trail. The Disappointment face switchbacks suck, but it’s better to make speed attempts by established routes so as to standardize the times we all want to compare (and avoid being an erosion-causing gaper).

Steve, I don’t see your fitness slipping any, but I think you’ve had some tough conditions near the summit on your speed attempts this summer. I’ll go with a 4:55:02 and lots of fun.

4:10:34 I think you busted out a new personnel best this time hope I’m right!!

  13. 13 Colby Aug 31st, 2009 at 11:48 am

5:15:27… I’m not saying that you’re slipping though, it was busy as hell up there on friday and conditions on the OS weren’t exactly ideal.

  14. 14 Daniel Aug 31st, 2009 at 12:36 pm

After the last time on Gannet I would say 5 hrs even time for you on the Grand,Mt.hood took me 7 hours and that was with full alpine gear.

    4:31:17

  23. 23 Lars Larson Aug 31st, 2009 at 3:11 pm

    I’m going with 4:45 even…

  24. 24 Tom Aug 31st, 2009 at 3:17 pm

I’m guessing 4:49:32, but for the record I think the words “running up the Grand Teton,” are pretty humbling regardless of time.

  25. 25 randosteve Aug 31st, 2009 at 3:29 pm

I can “run” up to the Meadows, but after that it’s mostly power hiking mixed with some running on the flatter sections after that. Of course it’s all running on the downhill…which takes a long time to recover from btw.

I do know some people that claim to be able to “run” all the way up to the Lower Saddle though. Seems hard since it gets so rocky…but I know they are stronger runners than I…so more power to them!

  26. 26 Corey DeClue Aug 31st, 2009 at 3:34 pm

    Keep those guesses coming!

  30. 30 Pamela Aug 31st, 2009 at 6:56 pm

    4:56 that’s a beginners guess for sure!!

I think you broke a heel and tore your nylons getting up to the Lower Saddle and had to spend an hour broadcasting it on Twitter from your iPhone.

    Steve,

    4:39:12

Do you have a PR time for JHMR-Rendezvous via the 7.2 mi Summit trail? I think the record is around 59 minutes. Astounding.

  49. 49 Paul - PL Sep 2nd, 2009 at 9:57 am

    4:44:44 :)

  50. 50 randosteve Sep 2nd, 2009 at 10:21 am

Tyler…I hadn’t heard that the Rendezvous time was sub 1 hour yet. I think the route got changed up that way a few years ago…so it might be shorter now. I’ve done the hill climb race there a few times…but can’t quite remember my times.

Funny though…I’m actually meeting a friend out there tonight to run up the hill.

  51. 51 Tyler Sep 2nd, 2009 at 10:41 am

I Googled and found an old news clip
    http://www.jhnewsandguide.com/article.php?art_id=852
    that reads as follows:

“Tom Borschel of Idaho Falls, Idaho, whose 1996 time of 58:49 is still the course record”.

The article suggests that it was the Summit Road route. That is serious running. Go ahead and post your time after your done if your workout lends itself to that. “Enjoy”.

  52. 52 Tyler Sep 2nd, 2009 at 10:42 am

Wait, I see what you mean. The sub-hour time might have been pre-7.2 mi coarse that the author is reporting on in the 2006 race. 66 minutes is still fast!

    4:38:11

  55. 55 randosteve Sep 2nd, 2009 at 1:10 pm

Yeah Tyler…I think you are right about the 58 min. time on the old route. If I recall, I was more in the 80-86 minute range for the races on “newer” route. Borchell was a powerhouse back then though.

Borschel was the 2004 masters world mountain running champion (45-49). He’s 53 and just now starting to slow down a bit.
Anyhow, I am thinking you haven’t been running as much this year as in ‘07 (???) so I’ll shoot at 5hrs2min.
