2009 Aconcagua/Polish Glacier Ski Expedition Update 2

polish-glacier-on-aconcagua6 Randokitty here, again for Randosteve…
Steve called this morning to say that their “recon. ski” went great yesterday, and that they actually found some great snow! The wind was howling this morning though, and so the team is taking a rest day. So far, everyone on the team is acclimatizing very well and their “pulse oxygen” results are all very good.

The plan is for the team to start heading up to Camp One tomorrow, but Steve is uncertain how many trips that will entail with all of their gear, skis etc. The team will continue up to Camp Two the following day, (weather allowing) and on to the Summit, the third day, if possible. The big caveat for this plan, however, is obviously weather, and Steve says that with the current wind situation, the “going” will be rough.

We’ll see! Please continue to send the team good thoughts and even a text message on the satellite phone (see two posts back for details on this). Please also continue to post comments for the team - and again, please bear with me as I try to post as much as possible from the parking lots in Red Rocks where I am currently rockclimbing. Still no internet at Base Camp and so Steve and I are trying to make do as much as possible and keep you all in the loop…

Please support TetonAT and save the snow by shopping GREEN at Backcountry.com.

Camp 1, camp 2…just go up from the base camp. You guys got skis, you’ll be fast. Come on send some pics skiing already :)

Which base camp are the guys using?
And what is all that gear they are hauling up before they go for the summit?

Camp 1, camp 2…just go up from the base camp. You guys can pull it off. Come on :)

So what is all the stuff you are carrying to higher camps before you can finally go even higher?

    Hi Stan:

It sounds like the team is currently hunkered down at the Plaza de Mulas basecamp, waiting out the wind. Unfortunately, the internet at base camp is not set up yet, so no skiing pics for us! As soon as Steve is back in wi-fi land, I am certain we will get the whole skiing shot blitz, though - and it sounds like it will be good; the team has been skiing some great terrain around the camp every day.

As for gear, Steve seems to think that the team will need to do multiple trips up to Camp One, at least, with skis, boots, tents, sleeping bags, stoves etc. We’ll see though, as the weather seems to be forcing the team into a shorter summit window…
