Pretty interesting to see the crew from TGR make a movie revolving around climate change. Generations (follow link to help TGR save the planet and win a subscription to Powder Magazine) seems a little more mainstream that their usual flicks of high energy skiing and loud music. Thing is…that really…I think this little snip, came out pretty good and I wonder what’s next for the Jones boys…an appearance on Oprah?
I see a lot of different views on climate change as I surf the web and read forums, and also from more mainstream media like television and radio. One thing that I find interesting, is how many people still bag on global warming as a farce…especially those in the ski community. Sometimes I think that those people are just more vocal about their opinions, while other times I think that since they may live in a “red state”, that those are really their beliefs. Rando’s opinion is that there has to be some influence on the planets natural cycles from from man’s intervention through pollution and over population. There…I said it.
Anyway, it’s cool to see more companies (like TGR) doing what they can and donating money (up to $5K) to organizations like Protect Our Winters. Good one fellas!

I wonder what TGR’s carbon foot print is? Do as I say, not as I do?
Winter 2007, most insane snow season ever? 20 years after my elementary school teacher warned our class that there would be no more winter in North America. Just sayin’
Al Gore would would need his own cable car to get to the top of da bird. Just sayin’
Perhaps I am overexposed to climate change stuff, but I need to critique this trailer’s use of the fear angle. All I see about climate change and global warming is fear based propoganda, and the negative results of negative actions. The common approach seems to instill fear in people of losing something precious. I think it’s crap. Too few medias advocate education and creativity in a positive direction towards progress. It makes me afraid that pop culture climate changers will allow fraudulent politicians to provide fraudulent solutions. Politicians, by definition of service, are primarily responsible for maintenance of the current standard of living for constituents. Climate change progress challenges the current standard of living, seeking new adaptation, it’s a non-competetive evolutionary stress-if you will.
Is it so hard to find and film examples of people doing small things that help. Can we show this? Maybe that will be my next film project. Is Education and community development more of a challenge to dramatize, artistify and market than cinemating a worldwide all-encompassing evil force against which to create an exciting new world order? We need to bring people closer to the solutions, rather than repelling/paralyzing folks with a charged boundary of fear. Also, I think that decreasing environmental impact, now termed carbon footprint, is a positive occupation anybody can enjoy in any community, independent of whether the entire globe is affected or not. Environmentalism is best practiced in small communities rather than over an entire planet. Have you ever seen a polar bear? Overwhelming? yes? I believe every little bit helps, and collective small actions are contagious and effective. Knowledge is power, get creative, experiment and find your own unique solutions to contribute to the potluck of climate change.
Remember to keep it real, moderate, celebrate variety, and don’t feel intimidated by extremist Nick Devore’s tipi lifestyle. For an intimate perspective on experimentation, I’d recommend Checking out Colin Beaven’s experiment/movie/book http://noimpactman.typepad.com/blog/
new york…most insane snow season for you maybe…but in a lot of places around the world…the drought continues.
…just sayin’.
thanks for the food-for-thought evan. unfortunately it seems our society is akin to scaring the pants of of you…than making you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. not saying it’s right…but it’s just how it is. i guess it wold have been better for TGR to show jeramey filling up his ride with bio-diesel…but man…that sure is stale!
One thing that is easy to see in this world is continuous change. Things come and go, including all kinds of species. Anyone who thinks the population can continue to grow, and everyone can continue to consume as much as we do in the U.S. without some consequences is a fool. We like to think we are trying to save the earth, this is just arrogance. The earth will be just fine. However there will be a breaking point and our species is going to face huge reductions that will not be fun for anyone. Its time for everyone to start looking at how they are living even if they some how think the global climate always stays the same.
Lee, I agree bro. I think we overestimate our impact and control over the planet. Hundreds of years ago a volcano blew up in Iceland that threw the entire northern hemisphere into a mini ice-age. Then there were the ice-ages in general. I’m not saying our actions have zero impact, I’m just saying that if the Earth decided it needed to “cleanse” itself it could be rid of us in no time. Even if we eliminated Carbon gases entirely, who’s to say another erruption or comet or some other even wouldn’t cause far worse climate change??? So enough ramlbing, I guess what I’m saying is this planet is constantly changing. We’ve been lucky enough that it’s supported life long enough for us to show up, but for several billion years before that it didn’t. To think we can keep the climate the way it is is ignorant. Whether we cause the change or it happens naturally, either way change will come and we’ll have to adapt.
well, after seeing TGR’s Generations…its kinda hard not to feeling gluttonous– jet setting around the world, helicopter flying, and snowmobile assisted skiing in search for powder on our winter ventures doesn’t help the melting glaciers. perhaps giving those motorized, assisted indulgences up,we would reduce our carbon footprint by heaps now wouldn’t we Boyz???
mean while, lets keep recycling!
cheers
It’s sad that the point of many arguments has been twisted into stereotypical scapegoatism (a classic deflectionary device used chiefly by the mainstream media against anybody conscious), labelling people who see the hypocracy and junk science of mainstream AGW hype as oil-company friendly or Rebublicans etc. Questioning the obviously corrupt status quo has nothing to do with not being environmentally friendly or engaging in voluntary simplicity. You just got to look at the logic behind what is happening and then it makes no sense. If CO2 is the real culprit, how can it have a real value as a commodity and be traded at the same time you want to eliminate it. Again, hypocracy, just like fat suits (insiders in the Carbon trading scheme including big oil) jetting from all over the world to Copenhagen to ignore real science and the real polluters of our planet. Never was it mentioned to do anything about the biggest polluter of the planet, the war machine…

Obviously then, there is no real concern over this bogus CO2 stuff. If the regular person has to suck it up for the pollution of the war machine that is exempt for the main polluters BS conflicts then there is something very wrong here. Now the facts are out regarding the manipulation of climate data after Climategate (not that it wasn’t obvious before)

we see that the UN is just another political body.
Furthermore…

So if we really do need to look at human influence on the climate were looking generally in the wrong direction. It’s not the local farmer and his farting cow that is altering things.
I’m not even gonna go into the vast archives of real science that really describes planetary climate, nor get into all the lies the mainstream has been hoodwinking everybody with, nor justify myself even though I went 20 years without a car.
So I then suggest that if you really want to save the planet, try focusing on more pertinent forms of pollution that will kill us far sooner than the world’s primary fertilizer. Like has been mentioned above, walk the walk or just kill yourself. Your carbon offsets are an investment in the destruction of the rest of the world.

The world is not overpopulated, it’s just a corrupt system that marginalizes all but the elite, whose stress cause human organisms to procreate at an artificial rate. So wake up out of the “bi-partisan” slumber out there. Republican/Democrat and in Canada Liberal/P.C. are just oppo-sames. The continued destruction of the environment is everybody’s fault that voted for Obama and Harper and still can’t see the mafia running these puppets that engage our nations in the useless, brutal, illegal and inhumane wars. Their crotches sure were burning to start bombing Yemen!!
Colin T, I couldn’t agree more. Constant planetary changes are here to stay and we don’t know how lucky we are to live in this present climactic age. The volcano that has been erupting in the Phillipines has probably pumped more C02 into the atmosphere that humans can in 50.
Save winter, what a joke!!!
ptor…that may be a record for most amount of links in a comment. nice…and thanks for the info!
though we all want to blame someone for the increased levels of pollutants in the atmosphere, you guys make a good point in that a volcano might pump out multiple times the amount of co2 than a person would. BUT…there are over 6 billion people in the entire world population (which has more has doubled in the past 50 years), so add all those polluting bodies together…and you get an awful lot of erupting volcanoes.
ptor…well stated my friend! yes, i agree that ,” your carbon offsets are an investment in the destruction of the rest of the world.,”. although , i do believe the selfish, over breeding of the human race, and all of our fitly byproducts, will ultimately lead to the destruction of our race, and unfortunately we are taking many other non polluting species down with us.
wish you all many powered turns in the new year.
peace out, for now.
I skied 18″ of new in the Wasatch a couple hours ago. That was fun. More on the way;)
It’s funny how all these pro skiers look very concerned, yet they all built their names with flying helicopters to shoot their images and movies. Are they gonna start hiking now? If not, then whether they turn off their computers each night or not doesn’t matter much, I believe.
I agree Stan. If one is truly convinced and concerned with something, like the world ending for our children then you would make appropriate sacrifices instead of just paying for your sins. It’s almost a religious thing, just like the classic "thou shalt not kill" unless your ego tells you it’s somehow justified.
The first one touches on stuff people’s awarenesses have been led away from, like the medevial warm period when they grew grapes in Scotland, Greenland was green and the climate globally was much warmer than now, which puts the urgency of today’s scenario into perspective.
There’s alot of hypocracy in the pro skier realm and although in reality it’s insignificant compared to the real polluters, WTF. I know one Patagonia ambassador that predominantly rides a sled and big truck all winter. One of Salomon’s top riders is spewing some "onestep" eco initiative while riding his sled and logging more heli-time than maybe anyone else.
However it’s good to see people stepping in the other direction and having some uphill pride and transmitting that, like Jeremy Jones. When I started ski-mountaineering, it was always the challenge to build up enough strength and stamina to shred as hard as possible after climbing a big line.
Finally I’d just like to add that all measures to reduce, reuse, recycle and stop polluting etc are great but there is no excuse for scaring people with lies, making the public pay for the technological changes or imposing further taxes. Babylon system needs changing and the people should not suffer for it.
Finally, two more links

Steve, you are correct that human C02 production outweighs volcanic input, but if CO2 is not causing climate change, nor is the climate actually warming but only going through it’s natural processes of mutations and undulations, then what is the problem with this many people besides repressed technology, misappropriated funds creating gross inequities of living standards and overconsumption induced through marketing, globalization convenience and the continuation of the city/state as a model of development. The surface of the earth is still relatively void of humans despite the clusters of population densities.
Ptor…yes…it may have been warmer in mid-evil times, but how many inhabitants of the planet skied back then? They were probably more concerned with raping and pillaging. If you ask me…I guess I’d choose to have colder temps over warmer temps any day. I think you would too?!
Only Vikings and Mongols skiing back then I guess, but I’m sure the Hawaiians were surfin it up regardless. If skiing were to end (which I highly doubt because were entering the next ice-age), there’s tons of other great stuff to do!!! The hotter, the longer the seasons there’s good thermals for paragliding. I’ll take whatever the Universe and Panchamama serves up any day. As as skiing goes these days, there’s tons of new lines coming in with glaciers melting in the alps, there’s no lack of snow, warmer storms are plastering the steeps better in the winter. I can’t find any reason to complain and I feel no reason to be attached to the way things used to be.
Yeah,
Good point about TGR’s footprint. Personally, I’m sick of Al Gore and the other greenies telling me how to live my life, when they fly around the world in their private jets.
Also, I like how the global warming camp has changed their crusade in the fight against climate change now that we have been in a cooling trend for the past couple of years.
Fluctuations in the weather and climate are mainly caused by the sun, not by CO2.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/topics/weather/6921281/Britain-facing-one-of-the-coldest-winters-in-100-years-experts-predict.html
Fortunately, no one has to listen to people who disagree about global warming. No one from the Blue States (read: civilization) has any doubt about global warming. Only people from places like Idaho, Montana, and Nevada disagree about global warming. For this reason, their opinions are invalid and there is no reason to listen to them.
Well, come on, don’t you agree that people from L.A. and New Jersey obviously know more about nature than the PBR drinking, uneducated, trailer-dwelling yahoos who live in barbaric places like Utah?
the population argument is bogus – use facts not emotion. 6 billion people. State of Texas is 2.2 million sq. miles. All of the worlds 6 billion people could fit into Texas with a population density of approx 2,600 people per sq. mile (do the math). The current population density of Manhattan NY is 72,000 people per sq. mile. The idea that their is a "carrying capacity" of the earth is some enviro nonsense that the unthinking take as axiom. Climate change is all about the money – ask yourself where all of those billions (by now trillions) of dollars have gone over the last 20 years to study and talk about this "problem".
your right…a desert environment (say…like…las vegas) was totally meant to support nearly 2 million people. come on…it’s not that cut-and-dry.
World population- 6,500,000,000/Texas Area 269,000sq miles(Not 2.2m!) would equal a Density of 24,164/sq mile.
NYC population- 8,400,000/NYC area 305sq miles= Population Density of 27,551/sq mile(not 72K!).
These mimimally rounded numbers are from Wikipedia, a far more reliable source than CK’s little "Hissy Fit Post".
We’re screwing our planet, plain and simple…
Summer Sucks, Think Snow!
RBC
CK did say Manhattan, so that number looks ok to me – no? Nevertheless, I’d love to know how a population that dense would manage self sufficiency. Brilliant!
