For all your rando racing fans, be sure to attend the USSMA Ski Mountaineering Classic at Grand Targhee this Saturday. (Click here for more information.) Though I won’t be racing in this event myself (I know, I know…slacker!) there are a few things about this race that are cool:
- It’s a qualifying event for the United States World Team. This year, the World Ski Mountaineering Championship is being held the first week of March in Andorra, a very small and often unknown country located in the Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France.
- It’s now a singles event. In the past it was teams race.
- Race start time isn’t until 10:30. WTF? Half the reason I’m out of rando racing now is because of those pre-dawn starts…glad to see things are changing a little.
- There are both race and rec race classes.
- You don’t need to buy a lift ticket to participate in the race.

Steve, thanks for posting the schedule image from USSMA.
For any New Englanders out there, we might have two additional races:
– a repeat of last season’s Berkshire East race, although this season a weekend later, on Saturday January 23; and,
– a relay race at Blue Hills, on Sunday January 31. (Yeah, I know, the day after Jay Peak, but they want to combine it with sort of fundraiser that day.)
If anyone is interested in these two races (or add’l info on any of the other NE rando races, especially the venues which don’t seem to be interested in publicizing themselves?), feel free to shoot me an email. (I think my address shows up in my posts.)
Also, in the sort-of a rando race category, here’s an interesting NH-based series that involves on-snow uphill & downhill travel:

The courses are designed to accommodate both ski area concerns and all manner of gear (e.g., AT, nordic, snowshoes, sneakers). The longest courses are very short, and the others are, well, even shorter. But if you live nearby and/or plan to be at those ski areas anyway those days, sounds like a fun way to start off the morning.
Berkshire East race now confirmed for Jan 23 — further details available upon request.
