Skiing Everest: The Movie

I meant to post this at 1am this morning…when I woke up to go skiing…but forgot. I’ve got a couple more posts from the Fairy Meadows trip if people are interested, but I figured we’d take a break for now. Check out this Skiing Mount Everest trailer. I remember hearing about Mike Merolt and company giving ‘er a go, but I don’t really remember the outcome. This video sure get’s me fired up though. Ciao for now and have a great weekend!

I should have stopped watching when they said “adventurer’s peak”, but it wasn’t until I saw someone slogging naxo’s up to 29k that I just couldn’t bear it any longer. blah

Have to laugh at the typo/misspelling of Mike Marolt’s name… Merlot and his brother Cabernet. He,he!

Does it really have to hurt?

Absolutely horrible trailer, which leads me to believe the movie isn’t any better…. Also don’t forget the fact Everest has been skied before (from the top) and the whole thing was filmed (full video available on http://www.sportna.tv >> scroll down to Davo Karnicar Everest 2000)

thanks jernej. props to davo…but man that video was pretty dry. was there any skiing even in it???

Davo used bottled oxygen, which the Marolts, in "Skiing Everest" and Hans Kammerlander, who was the first to ski from the summit of Everest, do not use, big difference. Also, as randosteve says, there’s only about 2 mins. of Davo skiing, out of a 58 min doc. We see very little of his ski descent.

I wonder how this compares to a seven summits skier who has a sherpa carry their skis up…?

    ouch…where’s that video gringo?

Arguing about O’s is semantics to me….but not carrying your own skis is inexcusable.

forget where i read it…but it was interesting to read what dave watson had to say about skiing with/without oxygen…after his trip to K2 last year. basically he was saying that yeah…you can not use O’s, fry your brain, loose your toes and not remember a thing from your trip, or use Os and have at least some wits about you for the descent and keep all ten digits.

  15. 15 gringo Mar 17th, 2010 at 1:56 pm

but did he carry his own skis?

  16. 16 randosteve Mar 17th, 2010 at 1:58 pm

yeah…but he didn’t make it to the top…skied the bottleneck…down.

There’s also a film about Davo skiing 7 summits if you’re interested. Trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY3YdIHTuV0
