Sherpa Cinemas, “All I Can” Trailer

This…looks like a pretty nice movie coming from Sherpa Cinemas out of British Columbia, and like the TGR “Deeper” flick, is a two year film project and is due out in the Fall of 2011. The film “All I Can“  was shot in the locals of Chile, Morocco, Haines and the mountains of Canada last season and they continue to work on getting more footage this season. The Sherpas attempt to take a different look at how we, as skiers, find balance between our love for the outdoors and the need for a long term “green” way of thinking and existence. Needless to say, the trailer is quite alluring and I’m sure the final piece will be even more so. Enjoy!

Another ski film trying to stand out by selling “do as I say, not as I do” environmentalism. How about just sticking to their strong points, which is filming skiing and editing well. They are good at that. But ramming this enviro garbage down our throats is weak.

“All I Can”, yet flying to Morocco and all over the world is nothing near “All I Can”.

The only true enviro skier is the dirt bag who travel only to his local mountains and skins up them, not flying all over the world to ski.

Another company using environmentalism to try to make a buck. Cue Al Gore.

derek…how does the dirtbag get to his local mountains? car, bike, walk? sounds like a slippery slope to me.

Randosteve, I love the epic video trailers you post.

Wow, that looks sweet. But i think i agree with Derek, they’re going to have a tough time selling it as an "environmentalist" ski film. You can tell from the trailer that this is not a Deeper-style project, from the widespread heli footage and from the cast of heli-skiing pros right from the ranks of the MSP and TGR lineup. Of course, I could be wrong, and everyone of those guys skinned and climbed up every single line in the movie. I’m sorry, it just seems a little presumptuous… kinda like TGRs "Generations." Can you really spend countless hours flying in helicopters to go skiing and not only claim to be "green" but to preach it others in film form? Discuss.

i totally understand where you guys are coming from, but i wonder if the quality of film one would get from a totally self powered endeavor would be the same as that which is achievable with a cineplex, heli, etc. i mean…if it’s not worth watching…your message isn’t getting very far.

here in jackson we take the bus. mass transit. all we can.

  7. 7 gringo Nov 11th, 2010 at 2:39 am

Well now, I can’t not poke this fire…
I take the train to bike, climb and ski in when in the Alps, and I hitch when in J-hole. i lived without a car for over 5 years now and I buy local eats, even when its cost prohibitive. But I would never think of trying to claim how green I am cuz the nature of my sports and what I do leaves a huge impact on the earth. Poisonous Carbon bikes frames, many, many pairs of toxic skis that cant be recycled, etc…
If they make a good ski flick I’ll watch it, but preaching green while burning a few tons of Jet A to get the dope footy is for sure contradictory….they should ditch the preaching and gain some credibility.

It’s too bad that the bus/shuttle thing has never been allowed to happen up on Teton Pass. There’s a lot of potential energy saving there.

The worst ski movie cliche is the gratuitous scene shot from a helicopter that shows another helicopter hovering over or tracking the skiers. Or one heli filming another heli dropping skiers at the summit. Usually in slomo, so you can really appreciate the beauty of the heli in action.

Tony and Gringo nailed it. I always cringe at the heli filming heli shots too. I agree with the statement that none of us should be preaching from a holier-than-though point of view. Remember, the most environmentally friendly way of life is to live in densely populated urban cores.

There was a line in the trailer “people in the mountains are on the front lines…next shot is of a pro skier walking down the street with his shiny plastic boots, fancy skis, and synthetic puffy. So KORE!

Not to mention that the ski/enviro thing is stale. It seems like there is at least one a year. Stick to skiing already.

tony – has there been a movement recently for the return of a ski jitney up teton pass? ive been in the valley for a relatively short period of time and havent heard a word about this. seems to me this would be a great addition to the valleys transportation system.

Steve, you may be right about quality of filming, but you need to see Deeper if you haven’t already. It sets the bar for high quality filming of self-powered endeavors. Granted it’s not the same quality of film of the many heli supported films, but it’s damn close.

Is this the same group as “Rocky Mountain Sherpas”? Some of the time lapse stuff and style of filming reminds me of “A Fine Line”.

I understand the thoughts of the majority of people who have previously commented on this subject. I have a major problem with your thoughts though, specifically the thought that flying around the world, riding toxic skis, filming via heli, and all around being taxing on the earth, is the problem and a disgrace for a group producing an environmental film with a strong message. This argument has been used for decades, and became especially strong after the release of An Inconvenient Truth, with everyone against the movie arguing that Al Gore flying on his private jet around the world is 100% hypocritical. Here is why that argument is stale and uninformed. Simple actions like the ones taken above, account for such a punitive amount of the total damage humans are responsible for on Earth. Individual energy consumption accounts for 25% of total consumption worldwide, the other 75% is commercial, industrial, etc. Individual municipal waste accounts for only 3% of global waste, the other 97% again from commercial and industrial sources. 10% of water is used by individuals and municipalies, the other 90% from agriculture and industry. The message here is that, while skipping a shower, recycling your newspaper, and biking to work, are all noble and amazing and should be done, conglomerate individual actions only account for a very small percent of what is going on worldwide. Industry, government, military, and so on carry the vast majority of the load you all are talking about.

The production of a ski, or other action sport film, with an environmental message that as far as I can tell stresses continued action to change the worlds course for the positive, while not reverting back to cave man mentality of subsistence living with zero footprint, is an amazing and powerful way of continuing to get the message across. A worthwhile use of a minuscule amount of resources, in my opinion. The Can. section of this trailer says that doing more, not less, to combat global environmental problems is the key. A great, great message.

I understand the general viewpoint of everyone on this comment board, and respect it, but just peruse this idea a bit and see if the perspective changes for you!

    Enjoy your days!!!

Do as I say not as I do just feels wrong and preachy, that’s all there is to it.

Maybe they should make a film about the inner conflict mountaineers have because we want to enjoy the mountains for selfish reasons yet our pursuit cause harm to the very place we love. That’s way more interesting to me. Otherwise keep your preachy heli flick to yourself.

Not sure I agree with some of the elitist comments I see here. -I have seen the full film and commend the artists for excellent cinematography, a good message, and inspiring footage.

We should all be more concerned about reducing the impact we can control and make a difference with, rather than slamming a film that has some great skiing and a great message. I commend the film makers for having the guts to get it out.

Our petroleum – lycra – plastic ski culture would do best to operate in any way that becomes more sustainable, while trasuring and protecting the resources that make our love of the sport possible. Global Warming is real, and there is not one Ski Resort out there that does not have some degree of concern. Sure there is a lot of Greenwashing out there, but it never hurts to propogate the message. Behaviors do change with time.

i hear you mgm…but you really have to practice what you preach around these parts to get the approval of the masses. some may say that just because you ski, automatically takes you out of defending environmentalism since the ski industry’s carbon use is so large.
