November in Garnet Canyon

Sooooo, I’ve gotten a few, “Have you skied in Garnet Canyon yet?”s recently, and the answer is…yes! I’ve been on a couple missions up into the north fork and over the weekend I skied on the Middle Teton Glacier. I wanted to go higher on the Middle, but I had left my avy gear in the car to save weight, and then felt naked as the snow got deeper and more winter-like the higher I got. Live and learn I guess. The skiing was okay…nothing to write home about. Anyway, here’s a little ditty I put together from the trip…have a great day!

    What size Aspects are those?

they are 176cm…and handled the choppy snow quite well actually. i opted to use the lightest skis i have for this trip, since getting up that way is kind of a longish trek right now. i normally ski on skis over 180cm and with a waist of 100mm+, and use the shorter/skinnier skis for spring descents when the snow is really firm.

    Steve,

Love playing dodge the rocks and see how far you can ski. I do that all the time in the spring… it’s too long of a drive right now to try it here in Calif.

How about some feedback on the site about the new BD skis and boots? I’m interested in trying the boot you have been skiing on the last month (the new 4 buckle, green and yellow). If I can get the cash together, maybe even a pair of the drifts.

“but I had left my avy gear in the car to save weight”

Did that pound of gear you left behind really help you move that much quicker? I can understand leaving it in the car during summer months, but funky (thin) snowpacks make funky slides.

smokey…it’s 2.5 pounds…and yes, i think i was faster. lighter=faster…no matter how you slice it IMHO as far as backcountry skiing goes. no?

and just because a snowpack is thin…doesn’t mean it’s spicy. i just felt naked without it when we got into deeper, softer snow.

Agreed on lighter=faster and typically safer. Here’s to a safe season….cheers.
