Fredrik Ericsson Dies on K2 Summit Attempt

I am sad to report that Swedish ski mountaineer Fredrik Ericsson has died on K2. Fredrik, who was trying to ski K2, was with female Austrian mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and on a summit bid when Fredrick, for unknown reasons, fell 1,000 meters and was killed. This is very sad to read as I’ve been following [...]

Nasty Weather on Broad Peak and K2

I’ve been getting some reports regarding the status of the Broad Peak and K2 Ski Expeditions going on the the Himalaya right now, and it seems as though bad weather currently has them on hold. Both teams have made it up to Camp 3 on their perspective peaks, but were forced back to basecamp due [...]

2010 Broad Peak and K2 Ski Expeditions

I’ve got my eye on a couple of ski expeditions that are about to get started in the Himalaya right now. One is an attempt on Broad Peak (8051M) by Benedikt Boehm and Pete Swenson, and the other is Fredrik Ericsson’s attempt on K2. Both of these expeditions are return trips/attempts for some of the [...]

Will K2 Ever Get Skied?

Dave Watson skis in front of K2. Photo courtesy AndySelters.com. Over the past few years, people have been trying to be the first to ski K2. Unfortunately, without much success. Two of the bigger names or people who seem to be really focused on the peak are Fredrik Erikson (Sweden/Chamonix) and Dave Watson (USA, Minnesota), [...]

The Off Square Theater Company Presents K2

I’m not much of an “arts” guy, though some people may say there’s a bit of an art to this blogging stuff, but this play by the Off Square Theater Company sounds like it could be interesting enough for even dopes like myself.  It’s a story about two climbers who get trapped on K2 at [...]

2009 Winter Outdoor Retailer Backcountry Basecamp

Rolled into the Winter Outdoor Retailer Backcountry Basecamp around noon yesterday and only had a few hours to check out the new ski gear, so I headed straight to the Black Diamond tent. BD was running a demonstration of the effectiveness of the AvaLung by burying OR show director Kenji Haroutunian and it was pretty [...]
