The Early Bird Gets the Worm on Static Peak

With the warmish temperatures we’ve been having lately (both day and night) and shallow freezes in the snowpack, it’s no wonder there seems to be little skier traffic in the hills recently. Low and behold though, our now historic snow-pack is starting to consolidate and there is some good skiing to be had…you just have […]

The Dirty Sanchez, Point 11,226

I’m not totally sure what to make of the snowpack after a few days of warm weather followed by colder temps, but it sounds like a good combination to start to set things up a bit more. I think the higher elevations are probably still a bit touchy, but the lower elevation lines seem to […]

Thank You Saint John

Today on Mount Saint John. Click all photos for larger image. Well, I think I need to have my head examined for not heeding my own advice to pull in the reigns this weekend due to a current questionable snowpack at the higher elevations here in the Tetons. Sometimes though, the lure to try and […]

Broken Thumb, Doc’s Thumb or Ulnar Collateral Couloir

While waiting for the bigger lines in the park to stabilize, I got out recently with Reed Finlay to ski a line on the north side of 25 Short that we have both both been eying for many years. Although 25 Short is a rather tame and low angle powder run, the lines on its […]

Once Bitten Twice Shy in Quartzite Canyon

Randosteve launching with the sunrise from Colter Bay in GTNP. Click all photos for larger image. After a long day skiing in Waterfalls Canyon and one day off to recover a little, Reed Finlay and I went back up into the northern range to investigate a ski line that we have both been eying for […]

Doane Peak, East Ridge Couloir

Reed Finlay heads towards the fog layer on Jackson Lake and the East Ridge Couloir (red line) of Doane Peak. Click all photos for larger image. Yeah, I’ve got a hit-list of ski descents that I want to get done, but sometimes you need to act impulsively and go with the flow and not have […]

Trigger

While skiing this steep line in the northern range yesterday, a 12-18″ slab released to my right on the fourth turn.  Luckily, it didn’t pull-out above me and I was able to ski away unscathed.  You can see the crown lower on the ridge on the right, and if you look close enough, the powder […]

Sneaker Couloir Video

Here is a little video I made a while back for the Black Diamond Journal of skiing the Sneaker Couloir in GTNP. It’s nothing special, mainly due to the low light and lack of HD POV camera. This was the last time my POV camera actually worked and I am in the market for a […]

Cortina’s Classic Couloirs

Here’s a little Euro weekend stoke for you. It’s a compilation of descents in a number of the Dolomite’s classic couloirs by Felix Hentz.  My favorite imagery in this video is at the end…now that is a rappel off a bridge if I’ve ever seen one.

Off The Couch

This has got to be one of the longest trip reports I’ve ever read for 12 hours of skiing.  Luckily, it’s a fantastic read written by Christian Beckwith, who got out for a day of skiing last weekend with one of the Teton’s most talented skiers, Mark Newcomb. A nice descent of the Northwest Couloir […]

Dike Snowfield Tour

Well, conditions are pretty prime for ski touring in the Tetons right now. There is some funky snow here and there, but if you time things right, the skiing is great! I got shut down a mission for the steep and deep yesterday (due to some lingering weather on the high peaks), but had a […]

Steamy Tetons Photo Dump

Sunrise on the Grand Teton. Click all photos for larger image. I’m just wrapping up a block of days off with some great powder skiing under mostly sunny skies, which makes for good ski photos. I had one shutdown mission, due to some tricky wind-slab conditions and the call to play it safe. I’m headed […]

Before and After

Randosteve dropping in on a burned area in the northern Tetons. Click photos for larger images. With all the new snow over the past week here in Jackson and sunny skies over the past few days, it’s been temping to try to ski some bigger lines. But, it seems like there are still some pesky […]

D5 Albright Slide?

So, last week I went on a ski tour to ski Son of Apocalypse Couloir on Prospector’s Mountain. Someone had skied it the day before (meaning we had sloppy seconds – something I hate), but they dropped in not quite from the top, so my partner and I were still able to get some untracked […]

Fourth Time Is A Charm

Randosteve negotiates the wave entrance in the Sneaker Couloir. Click all photos for larger image. Sometimes I get obsessed with a ski line, especially one that I haven’t skied before. For the past few weeks, it’s been a line called Sneaker Couloir, which has taken me four tries to ski. The first try, and about […]

2.19.2011 Bighorn Sheep Sighting

Had a cool bighorn sheep sighting yesterday. Normally the sheep don’t run right towards you, but I think another party down canyon might have spooked them towards us.

Albright Slayage

Skier’s on North Couloir of Albright. Click all photos for larger image. After a windy day on 10,696, the weather broke for a bit on Sunday and I was on my own. I got a slow start out of the condo, but was on the trail a little before 9am, following a skin track up […]

Windy Peak 10,696

Over the weekend, I skied Peak 10,696 in Grand Teton National Park with Randokitty. The weather was pretty burly, with wind gusts close to 70mph that day. The skiing was halfway decent, when you could see, and Kitty got blasted by a huge wind gust on her descent.

Southwest Couloir, Mount Moran

It seems high pressure is in the house in the Tetons lately and here for a long term stay. With a ton of avalanche classes and other skiers making their rounds on the lines close to the parking lots and trailheads, I teamed up with Reed Finlay for an adventure far from everything else. We […]

Thanks For Getting Me Amped!

I’m sitting here fighting a cold, resting, and staring out the window at a beautiful bluebird day. I’m also responding to some emails about Teton approaches, which lead me to revisit this video. Thanks for your emails…they are getting me amped for a park day tomorrow. 🙂
